The last stop aboard the Summit on our week-long cruise was in the US Virgin Islands (USVI), St. Thomas, the largest of the US islands. Celebrity truly saved the best for last and better yet, this gem belongs in the States! The port where we landed was Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the USVI. There are a handful of high-end boutique shops, but not much else nearby. The main attractions are either Megan’s Bay or Trunk Bay (on St. John). We opted to take a Celebrity excursion tour to St. John, about 30 minutes away from the ship. It’s well worth it to pay a few extra dollars to take the ship’s excursion so they guarantee that you be back to the ship before it departs. St. John is also fairly easily accessible by a public ferry that run between the two islands.

Our tour lead us through the Caribbean Sea to Cruz Bay. The guides were knowledgeable about the history and pointed out significant historical landmarks along the way such as where Christopher Columbus crash landed in the “new world” and who owns what pristine ocean-view property. The captain also mentioned how the USVI was purchased from Denmark for $25M in gold in 1917, coincidentally the first time the US went into debt. With the view and pristine beauty of the islands, I’d say it was absolutely worth!

Once you get to Cruz Bay, there are several open-air taxis (jeeps) waiting to take you into the Virgin Islands National Park that encompasses most of the island. Before the park was established, there were a few residences established and they have since been grandfathered making them very valuable to own and rent. The island is mostly undisturbed and the roads are never have any traffic (definitely another win for this Caribbean destination). The main street (North Shore Rd) winds through the northern edge of St. John and has lookouts along the way that the taxi stopped allowing us ample time to snap some breathtaking photos of the view.

At the top of the first hill overlooks Cruz Bay where our boat dropped us off. I didn’t realize how much color and how beautiful it was. Taking a step back to take it all in is quite special. The next overlook was Caneel Bay. A private beach that hosts weddings for a bargain price of $20,000 to rent for the day.

Panorama of the vista overlook

The last overlook contained the million dollar view that we had been waiting for all week, actually, salivating over for weeks prior to the trip. Words cannot comprehend just how incredible the view is of Trunk Bay.

As much as I would have loved to sit there and take it in for the rest of the day, the driver beckoned us back into the car and we were off to swim in the bay.

Map of the underwater snorkel trail.

Admission for the day is $4, kids under 16 are free. They have plenty of showers, restrooms, and changing areas to use. The beach itself is a narrow stretch of soft sand. There is some shade under the trees towards the back of the beach. Oddly enough, it rained while we were on the beach and we found ourselves taking cover under the trees to prevent from getting wet … on the beach. After a quick shower silliness, we went snorkeling for the rest of the afternoon and it turned out to be a perfect day.

The water in Trunk Bay was the clearest all week and the area was teeming with aquatic life. Thus far, I hadn’t been too impressed with the fish, coral, and clarity of the Caribbean, but this day really made the trip. I’ve only gone snorkeling in the Western Caribbean where there wasn’t many fish either and Phuket, Thailand where the water was extremely clear and abundant with life. To be fair, the Caribbean is known for its beaches and not it’s snorkeling.

The park has an underwater trail that you can follow that leads you around the aquatic life and points out some of the interesting coral formations. The bay itself is well enclosed on the sides and there’s a small island to prevent it from getting too wavy. It’s definitely a great area for beginners.

The afternoon quickly came to a close as it was time to start heading back to the ship. On the way back, I snapped this gem of the top of the taxis. It adequately sums up island living. On the boat back to the ship, it started getting cloudy and rained again. We were lucky to have spent most of the day out of the rain!
The post Island Paradise in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands first appeared on ryanjc.net: photos and travel.

The next port of call was the Dutch/French island of Sint Maarten / Saint Martin depending on which side you visit. Ships usually all dock on the southern point of the island on the Dutch side in Phillipsburg. St. Maarten is a highly developed and commercialized island. Out of the entire trip, I would say it has the most development in thanks due to its famous international airport, strong European influence, and that it’s a very popular cruise destination. It’s also home to one of the top Caribbean medical schools, AUC.

The day we arrived, there were at least 3 other giant vessels – Princess’s flagship vessel, the Royal Princess, Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas, and the MSC Musica Four large ships is not unheard of for such a busy port. In fact, it’s a relatively lighter day since the port can handle up to six to seven large cruise liners. It’s usually best to consult the Cruise TT timetable while planning your trip to gauge how crowded the islands are upon your arrival.

Getting around the island is easy. English is widely spoken and people are friendly, almost too friendly (more on that in a second). The island is so commercialized and developed that it makes for doing your own self-guided tour a breeze without booking an excursion through the ship, hence the going Dutch title. We wanted to visit the western part of the island and had planned to take a public bus from Phillipsburg to Mullet Beach. And by bus, I mean minivan the size of an airport shuttle. Walking the city streets, there are no officially designated bus stops, you just have to flag down the right van going to where you want to go. We were able to hail and empty one and hopped in. The fare was a very reasonable $4 USD for the two of us, each way. We were the first on, but definitely not the last. As we drove across the island, it quickly filled up. There were three rows of seating and each became filled with four passengers. With the driver, we had fourteen people in this little van. It was a tight squeeze under the warm sun, but somehow we all fit and everyone was able to make it to their destinations. People getting on and off would also be extremely courteous, greeting each other on the way and helping people coming on and off.

Being the week before Christmas, the school was deserted and we weren’t able to go in to take a look around. From the top of the hill, the school overlooks a large part of the island and the gorgeous waters of Saint Maarten. It definitely looks like a beautiful place to study medicine.

Walking back down, we passed a beautiful rocky overlook and walked down to Mullet Beach. This beach is relatively more remote and less known than Orient Bay on the French side, which draws huge crowds every time. The people on the beach were mostly locals and people staying at nearby hotels, so cruise traffic was definitely at a minimum. We were able to find a nice mangrove tree on the eastern end of the beach to take shelter. The beach itself is very well protected because it is not facing the open Atlantic side and the water is clear and there were many schools of fish. You can swim 10 feet off shore and follow the rocks as the fish are just congregating around the coral and rock structures.

After a couple hours of relaxing on the beach, we wanted to make our way over to the iconic SXM, Princess Juliana International Airport. What makes it famous is that at the end of the single runway (Runway 10) is a small sandy beach, Maho Beach. Every day, hundreds of tourists flock to watch landing after landing of commercial and cargo planes land just feet from the beach. Since we spent too much time on the beach, we missed one of the 747 landings for the day, but we did see many other planes come and go.

It’s really something to be standing so close to planes landing just overhead. The pictures speak for themselves as the experience is like no other. The planes come so close to the beach that the bigger ones commonly cause a wake on the water and generate some large waves. Similarly, planes taking off can create an immense amount of thrust that they blow sand and crazy tourists down the beach. There are caution signs all around warning of the blast from these aircraft, but tourists being tourist ignore these warnings and try to get as close as possible and brace the takeoffs. We made such a mistake and let’s just say it will never happen again.

On one takeoff by an InselAir MD-83, we could see the pilots happily waving back at all the screaming crowd as the plane made its final turn onto the runway. The plane seemed to take an extra wide turn before positioning itself as far back on the runway as it could go. Before long, the plane was at max thrust and hot sand was blowing everywhere. What lasted less than thirty seconds, felt like 10 minutes. The crowd behind the plane was being sandblasted and blown over and down the beach towards the water. I was quick to duck and cover and tried to make myself as small as possible. I couldn’t see anything in the sandstorm, but I could hear the screams of the crowd and feel the sharp sand as it flew all around me. The aftermath wasn’t pretty. Many people ended up tumbling down the beach into the water, getting a face-full of sand, and getting the wind knocked right out of them.

You can watch the videos on Youtube of all the poor people tumbling into the ocean as they hang on for dear life. There are several bars and restaurants on southern end of the beach where people watch the planes come and go all day.

We departed the airport at about 3PM after deciding to not wait for an incoming Air France 747. We were originally planning on catching a taxi back to the pier but managed to find a bus on the main road back o Phillipsburg. When you go to further parts of the island, you have to be mindful of some of the bridges that raise for fifteen or so minutes about 6 times a day. This can lead to long traffic delays and you do NOT want to be late back to your ship. Since we gave ourselves plenty of time, we had an extra hour to walk around the shops and beach by the pier.

It was an incredible day unlike any other. The beach we picked out to visit was gorgeous and the experience of standing at the end of an international airport runway was unforgettable to say the least. Watching the videos of the planes taking off and landing prior to our trip had me so excited for the experience and I definitely look forward to going back not only for it but also the Saint Maarten beaches. St. Maarten definitely ranks as the number two island of the voyage after St. Thomas (the final island).
The post Going Dutch on the island St. Maarten first appeared on ryanjc.net: photos and travel.

On Wednesday of our week long voyage from San Juan, Puerto Rico, we reached the gorgeous island of Antigua. Our excursion through the day was booked through the ship as it provided a guided bus tour across the length of the the island to Shirley Heights Lookout, then down to Nelsons Dockyard, and lastly to Turners Beach on the southwest tip of the island. Formerly a British colony, Antigua is known for many things; a haven for celebrities like Oprah, Eric Clapton, Armani to name a few, two medical schools, banking, online gambling, and above all else, their 365 beaches, one for every day of the year.

Our ship in the port of St. John’s, Antigua parked next to one of Carnival’s flagships, the Freedom

Our bus ride through the island up to Shirley Heights Lookout was a very relaxing countryside drive. After leaving the busy city of St. John’s, we left the traffic behind and drove through the winding country roads and rolling green hills. The island has several parishes each with small communities along the way. There are numerous churches and colorful buildings. Unlike the crowded city of Castries, St. Lucia, Antigua seems like a much more laid back country where people are easy going and live a simpler life. The houses have doors and windows open and it feels like a very safe place.

After Shirley Heights, we drove down into Nelsons Dockyard for a tour of the colonial dockyard and drink, courtesy of the tour. It’s an old colonial British port and is now home to many yachts and impressive sailboats. From there we drove back north towards the center of the island then east to Turners Beach. On the way there, the guide talked some more about the local economy and some of the native fruits on the island.

Antigua is well known for it’s “black pineapple,” said to be the sweetest on earth. The outside is slightly darker, but it looks like any other pineapple on the inside. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try any, but I definitely will make it a point next time! This last leg of our trip took us through the Fig Tree Drive. They’re not actually figs but rather bananas. On Antigua, they use the two fruit names interchangeably.

The last and most relaxing stop for the day was Turners Beach. The water was cool and very refreshing. The beach was quite busy, but we managed to find some shade under a cabana which we shared with a German couple from our ship on holiday for Christmas. The water wasn’t very clear and there was not any coral to be seen so snorkeling didn’t yield much in the way of fish.

Back to the port of St. John’s, Antigua, we walked around the shops. There was festive Christmas music playing and the port was quite busy with several large ships in town. I was surprised how modern the island is compared with the previous day of St. Lucia. There were some high end shops, plenty of familiar western brands, wifi cafes, electronic and camera stores, and lots of small casinos. The island is full of life, color, and interesting British history as an early settlement.

Sunset back aboard the Summit was beautiful as we departed from the island of Antigua.

Our second island stop brought us to the island of St. Lucia and the capital port city of Castries. We started the morning a bit late and was surprised to wake up in the port. The city is larger and much more developed in the sense that there are more buildings and roads in the city. In walking through the city, it wasn’t as clean or maintained as well as Barbados.

The day started as a beautiful, clear morning

Out of all the islands we had visited during this trip, it was probably the poorest this was probably the most indigent. That’s not to say the island doesn’t have some expensive resorts (such as Beaches, which you see advertised on TV all the time). There’s a visibly large economic gap on many parts of the island. As the island depends on tourism, they really welcome the ships that stop each day. So much so, that you will be bombarded by tour operators and vendors as you exit the terminal.
Our excursion for the day was in the afternoon so we spent the morning walking to the nearby Vigie Beach. It’s the closest beach to the cruise terminal, well within walking distance (about 20-30 minutes). It would be much closer were it not for an airport situated parallel to the beach that you have to walk all the way around. The walk takes you through the city, along the terminals where the ships dock, and past the airport. Not all the sidewalks are well paved, so watch your step.

Vigie Beach may be the closest, but it’s probably not worth going to unless you’re short on time. The only thing to be found on the beach is the Rendezvous couples resort (which goes for $800+ a night) and a cemetery. Walking along the beach and accidentally through the beach in front of the resort, we were shooed off by an unfriendly security guard. I suppose the beach is swimmable, but it’s quite rough as it faces north, towards the open water. There’s not much sand to enjoy either. On the opposite end of the resort sits the cemetery. There were locals cleaning the cemetery and sweeping the beach. They did a great job of keeping it clean and free of litter, leaves, and seaweed. One gentleman waved us welcome into the cemetery with his large machete as he saw us looking. We politely declined and kept walking, a bit faster than we had before.

We got off at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. It’s the largest church in the entire Caribbean and the second highest ranked attraction on TripAdvisor. It’s a beautiful cathedral decked out in all sorts of wood. Unlike all the churches in Europe, this one has no stone or granite, just elaborate rich wood decorations.

As we were leaving the cathedral, it started to rain, so we hurried back to the ship to find something to eat for lunch before we had to meet our tour. By the time we got back to the ship, it had started pouring. The skies had opened up. You couldn’t even see the city anymore through the dense rain. About twenty minutes later, the rain stopped and the skies slowly parted as sunlight peered through the clouds.

It’s the time on the ship that they are transitioning from breakfast to lunch and nothing seemed to be open. The burger grill had a line of hungry passengers and they were slowly setting up all the meats, toppings, and firing up the grills. We relented and got in line for whatever they had. As we were eating, real food slowly appeared at the buffet and I managed another few plates to complete my meal.

The tour we chose was snorkeling under the Pitons at Pitons Bay, home of the two famous volcanic formations in St. Lucia. They are volcanic plugs; lava has filled and sealed the vents. The each rise about 2300 feet (700ish meters). It was really neat to swim in a marine reserve directly between the two pitons. The rocky beach is very secluded and roped off to protect the marine life. There were finally plenty of fish and coral to enjoy. They aren’t the most colorful and the water isn’t the clearest, but there are some unique coral formations fish to be seen.

I was stunned by how green the water of the port was. The early morning sun really made the clear water glow brilliantly. As the only ship in the port for the day, the Celebrity Summit, looked so majestic. I was proud to call it home for the week.

As our first stop aboard the Celebrity Summit, I know now that they are also home to some of the most unreal turquoise clear blue water I have ever seen. The capital city of Bridgetown seems to be a cute quiet port town with its primary industry being tourism, like all of the other Caribbean islands.

Carlisle Bay’s beach is just a couple of miles away from the port, just a short walk ( actually less than 1.5 miles) down the coastline, past the downtown city area, and just across a bridge. The city of Bridgetown gets its name the bridge that the British found, one of the only structures, on the abandoned city back in the 1600s. According to Wikipedia, it’s also the only city outside the United States that George Washington visited!

The walk takes about 20-30 minutes depending on your pace and how often you stop to take pictures and see the local sites. The cab ride to the beach started at $5 per person (one way) at the port and dropped to a mere $3 on the street just outside the port. Since it was a beautiful day, we decided to walk along the water and through the city on the way back (since the buildings provided some shade). One thing I noticed along the trip were just how many different and international banks each of the islands seemed to have.

The beach itself is a gorgeous stretch of white sand and an underwater treasure trove of marine life (famous for sea turtles) and underwater sights (shipwrecks). As our ship was the only one at port, the beach was not crowded and there was plenty of beach to enjoy.

When you get to the beach, there are several locals who will introduce themselves and offer to sell you chairs, drinks, boat tours, and trips back to the ship, just kindly say no thanks and keep walking further down the beach; it gets much cheaper! We decided to settle at Harbour Lights (one of many restaurants on the beach that will gladly sell you an umbrella, chairs, drinks, and food). They had the best price for beach chairs and an umbrella at $15 for the day and some of our dinner compadres had also arrived, so it made for the perfect day at the beach!

In terms of snorkeling, and it could have been the day, we did not see any coral, fish, or turtles. I was a bit disappointed because I really wanted to see their famous turtles. The sea turtles are usually found just off the beach and many times you don’t even need to hire a boat to take you out to see them because they are that close. When we talked with other people who took boats out, they only managed to see a handful of turtles and not much else. So, it’s definitely a hit or miss.
The post Beautiful Barbardos on the Celebrity Summit first appeared on ryanjc.net: photos and travel.

After a week on the boat and having everything served to you day and night can really spoil you! Being on the ship is nice because you can do anything and everything or nothing at all and still have a good time. You don’t have to worry about what’s for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, because if you’re hungry, you just eat!

This was the second cruise I have been on. The first cruise I ever took was to Alaska about ten years ago on the Norwegian Star. I don’t plan on waiting another ten years to take another cruise because I’ve discovered that cruising is the ideal vacation! The destinations are exotic. the food is plentiful (and mostly pretty good depending on what ship you’re on), and the activities abundant. There really is something for everyone aboard each ship. With several thousand passengers, each vessel becomes your own self-sufficient floating home taking you from destination to destination.

Recap

Day 1: First day on the Carnival Magic
Day 2-3: FUN days at sea
Day 4: Roatan, Honduras
Day 5: Belize City, Belize
Day 6: Cozumel, Mexico
Day 7: FUN day at Sea
Day 8: Back to Galveston, TX

Service

The number one thing that stuck out the most for me was the incredible service aboard the ship. Day or night, we were greeted by smiles and warm salutations from the crew. All of them are glad to direct you around the ship and will happily talk with you and ask about your day. Most were willing to go out of their way to make sure you got what you wanted or needed. One that thing struck me was how happy everyone seemed. This is one thing I have noticed about successful retail stores and other businesses. Happy employees make for happy customers. Out of the five categories I have chosen to discuss and rate, service has to be the best aspect of the Carnival Magic. They worked hard to earn their added gratuity split amongst the crew. At night the wait staff would always sing and dance to a couple of songs. When was the last time you saw that at dinner?

5/5 for a near perfect experience with the staff.

Food

Never at any point was I or should you be hungry on a cruise. Any time can be eating time and there’s always something to eat, 24/7. On the case of the Magic, it was the Pizza Bar, the soft-serve ice cream machines, and room service. All in all, the food quality was a mixed bag however.

The breakfast variety between the buffet, the outdoor grill, and brunch was excellent. It was easy to find tasty (and healthy) items with good variety. For coffee and hot beverage drinkers there are several self-brewing coffee machines for coffees, teas, and hot chocolates. In addition, there are several fruit juices (orange, apple, and guava punch) and iced tea. Be sure to grab some fruits and fill up your water bottles before heading out for the day’s adventures.

Lunch options included the buffet, the Cucina del Capitano restaurant (gratis, free, at lunch) or the other selected restaurants (poolside grill, pizza bar, the Indian Tandoor, or the Sub Shop (also all free). I highly recommend the Tandoor and Italian restaurants as the food is quite authentic (especially the Indian) and has a more homemade touch to them. If you’re ever looking for a quick snack, check out the Pizza Bar (which is always hot and fresh) or the grill for fries and/or a burger. These two options are perfect for and get crowded after a long day of excursions on the islands. There’s also usually at least one section of the buffet open between breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that dinner was the lowest ranking aspect in terms of food and in the greatest need for improvement on my list. Again, the service in the main dining room was excellent and the staff was equally friendly, cheerful, and helpful, but the entrées were really lacking in taste, presentation, and variety. Compared with some of the other dishes and creativity on the ship, dinner seemed to fall short. Every night there were two menus. One was a fixed menu that had American staples such as a burger, salmon, a beef and chicken dish, and other common dinner foods. The other changed day to day and could be found posted outside the dining rooms or on the TVs in the room. I always ordered off the daily menu to try something new, each time, feeling a bit disappointed. The descriptions of some of the dishes of seafood and steak sound mouthwatering, but in reality, left me feeling empty inside. This meal was frequently salvaged by the excellent appetizers and desserts though! The appetizer items were fresh ideas and different and I sometimes would get two of them because I knew they would be good. Desserts too were incredibly made and definitely left you wanting more.

Alternatively, you can make dinner reservations for either the Cruise’s steak restaurant (Prime) for an extra $35 per person or the Italian restaurant for an extra $12per person. Both are all you can eat of course. I’d suggest checking out the Italian restaurant for lunch since it’s free and has pretty much the same menu and the steak restaurant if you’re a big steak lover, it’s supposed to be very good and up to steak-restaurant quality.

3.5/5 for an underwhelming dinner that didn’t quite live up to the hype of the menu.

Entertainment

Entertainment on board was average. The shows weren’t particularly large productions, the singing and dancing was mediocre. Don’t expect anything near Vegas or Broadway productions. The games and other group ship activities weren’t interesting. The bingo was overpriced. The comedy shows were either not funny or too vulgar for my tastes.

The strong suits of entertainment on board would have to be some of the quieter parts on deck where you can just kick back and relax, read a book, and just enjoy being out on the water. The Hat Trick casino was decent and the dealers were friendly. Additionally, the fitness room was quite nice and there were a dozen treadmills facing the front of the ship. One of the other nice things to check out is the piano bar which plays nightly for several hours.

If you have young kids, I think they would enjoy the mini water park, ropes course, miniature golf, kid clubs, and teen nightclubs and all the other things catered towards a younger crowd.

The entertainment definitely needs work. I don’t think Carnival ships offers anything near that of Royal Caribbean’s. RCL has many large pools, rock-climbing walls, ice-skating rinks, and Cirque du Soleil style shows. NCL even offers Blue Man Group shows. I’m ok with mediocre entertainment provided I can entertain myself. We booked the cruise to travel to cool destinations. Enjoying the ship is just a perk of getting there.

3/5 for pretty keeping myself entertained.

Itinerary

On this Western Caribbean route of the Carnival Magic from Galveston, we visited three islands (in order) Roatan, Honduras, Belize City, Belize, and Cozumel, Mexico. I’ve heard it said amongst fellow passengers that every trip has one “bad apple” when it comes to a port of call. It was supposed to have been Belize. But I have to say that if you do your research ahead of time and know what it is you want to do and where others have gone, you can have a great time. Every island has something unique to offer, you just have to find it. For a detailed overview about each day, you can read about Roatan, Belize, and Cozumel‘s individual posts.

Each day’s Fun Times Guide listed all of the activities and happenings around the ship from sun up to well after sun down. There’s various classes, shows, activities, games, art auctions, and eating events going on around the ship.

In short, our time spent in Roatan was with a tour guide showing us the island, talking about its history, the culture, and how the local people live. We also stopped at their private zoo and saw a variety the animals before heading off to the beach in the late morning and early afternoon.

In Belize, we immediately found a tour company with a boat which took us to their private island where we spent the entire day snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing on the secluded beach.

In Cozumel, we lead our own self-gudied tour to the Chankanaab National Park and spent the rest of the day shopping in the port.

5/5 for seeing new places that most don’t get to see when they think “Caribbean.”

As an aside, I would love to see Carnival or the other operators out of Galveston sail to the Eastern Caribbean and add new destinations other than Jamaica and the Grand Cayman Islands (the alternate route that runs every other week).

Value

For $550 a person per week for the 7 night trip, cruising on the Carnival Magic is a great deal! That’s $80 per person per night which includes your room, as many meals as you can eat in a day, entertainment, and a ship that takes you to some incredible and pretty exotic destinations! Had we gone the week after (through Christmas), the price would have been more than double. If you can avoid any major holidays, you can save a bundle.

The only other things to factor in are getting to and from the cruise terminal (driving to Galveston for us) and gratuity for the hardworking staff. Gratuity runs $11.50 per person per day and is broken down to 50% for the dining staff, 32% for the room stewards, and 18% for the other staff. While the amount is “suggested,” you can adjust it up or down depending on your wishes at the end of the cruise. The staff works hard around the clock to make sure all the needs of the guests are met and in my book, they definitely earned and deserve the gratuity.

One thing that I wish was included or at least cheaper was free WiFi or internet access at kiosks. I can understand being in the middle of the gulf and having to use limited bandwidth for internet among thousands of guests could probably get taxing, but it’s 2013. Being off the internet for a week though is nice to get away and not have to worry about.

5/5 for a week-long of unforgettable fun at a good deal.

Overall: 4.3/5 and highly recommended!
The post Carnival Magic Review and Recap first appeared on ryanjc.net: photos and travel.

The last morning, we arrived early back in Galveston. There wasn’t much left to do on the ship as most everything had closed. The buffet was still open, so we grabbed a quick breakfast and waited for our section to be disembarked (dismissed). The previous night we had everything packed and ready to go so when our section was called, we grabbed our luggage and rolled them downstairs and off the ship. We waited in a long line at Customs for about 20 minutes. Thankfully it filtered through quickly. This gave us enough time to drive through a little bit of Galveston that morning and see what life was like on the island, drive past the medical school (UT Medical Branch), and check out some of the beaches.

If you’ve ever been to Galveston, you’ll probably find that there’s not really much there, particularly when it comes to the beaches. The sand is nowhere near the crystal white beaches of Destin on the other end of the Gulf of Mexico and it’s not as pristine. Overall, a good way to end the week long pre-Christmas trip! I might add the following week of Christmas was a great way to enjoy another vacation from your vacation!

All I have are two pictures from the beach. I thought it was pretty neat to be able to park just off the beach! After about 6 hours later (lunch in Houston), we were back to dfw!

The last day of the cruise was the third and last “fun day” at sea sailing back to Galveston. After getting rocked to sleep by the high waves and winds, it was another late lazy morning, too late for breakfast, but perfect for brunch!

Brunch on the Magic is incredible! The wide breakfast selection included many hearty breakfast items variety of other brunch items, some with a twist (like Frosted Flakes-coated french toast). I got a fruit plate, eggs Benedict with potatoes and hash browns (didn’t realize it already came with breakfast potatoes), french toast, and cheesecake for dessert. The waiter looked at me when he was taking the order and was like “you can eat all that?” and I sure did, enjoying every bite of it!

The rest of the day we took very easy, reading a couple books. That evening, the sunset was blanketed with thick patchy clouds which made for a unique sunset over the water.

The crew put on something special for Christmas (which was in a few days time). They had “holiday” caroling in the atrium complete with all the traditional Christmas carols, Christmas lights, a live band and singers, and SNOW shooting out from the upper decks on the tenth floor. It was a lot of fun and great to see that everyone was in the Christmas spirit! Oddly enough the word Christmas was never spoken by the staff. Why not call it for what it is?

Dinner for me was a chilled mango soup (amazing!), a crab cake (a little bit too mushy for my tastes), eggplant Parmesan (way too salty), a fruit plate, and a souffle for dessert (incredible!). Overall the dinner trend continued through the week. Good appetizers and phenomenal desserts, but lackluster entrees. In short, the entrees look better than they taste (take for example the eggplant Parmesan).

Cozumel is the one place all the ships in the Caribbean seem to stop. Like all the other islands, it’s primary economy is tourism. But Cocuzumel is by far the most developed, busiest, and the most prosperous of the three islands we visited. The island has its own airport, many resorts, parks, beaches, shopping, and snorkeling. At the time, there were seven ships docked at Cozumel.

The morning started off very lazily and later than usual, having been up later than usual the previous night and waking up early to catch the sunrise each morning really takes its toll. We had a pleasant surprise that morning having come up to the pool deck and being greeted by a flock of towel animals!

As we were disembarking from the ship, the giant Carnival Conquest parked adjacent to our ship. It’s very cool to watch such a large ship maneuver into a relatively tiny port and park, sometimes nearly parallel. Our plan for the day was to visit Chancanab Park which is similar to Sea World in the US except it’s run by the government. So in a way like a state park with sea lion and dolphin shows, but also a beach. It’s not too far from the port and can be easily accessed by taxi (we were able to split a taxi on the way back).

Unfortunately the day was very windy as a storm was blowing through so we didn’t dare go into the water risk getting smashed against the rocks. I heard the snorkeling off the beach is gorgeous which was unfortunate timing for us because I wanted to go swimming again!

There were handful of lions dancing, playing with beach balls, balancing objects, and interacting with the trainers and audience. You can swim with the dolphins though!

It’s water is crystal clear turquoise and there’s plenty of fish swimming about.

Heading back to the port, Puerta Maya, you’ll find a lot of various souvenir shops and some restaurants (more just outside the port on the other side of the street). One interesting find is a mini Chinatown complete with a wifi cafe, grocery store, and restaurant all in one. I didn’t manage to find any free wifi, but a cafe seemed to have access for customers. I must say, it is nice to get away from the ethereal chains of the internet while on vacation that tether most of us cling to (me probably more than others).

And by the time we left Puerta Maya, it had grown very dark and extremely windy. That night, we faced 70+ mph winds as we sailed back north for Galveston. Thus, no sunset could be seen :(. That night and the following morning, the boat rocked and swayed side to side the entire time. I found it soothing to be rocked to sleep, but others didn’t take it as well.

Dinner that night was one of the specialty nights complete with my favorite cut, filet mignon with entertainment provided by the wait staff, Gangnam Style! The entire crew goes out of their way to make sure you are having fun!

After dinner, we hit the Punchliner Comedy Club for a comedy show. It was OK. A bit too vulgar for my taste and more slapstick lame humor that was mildly funny at best. I’ve seen better on Comedy Central.

That’s all for the last port, Cozumel, day 6!
